On the cancellation of "Work It"

Regardless of the bigotry towards the transgender community, transsexuals and the Hispanic community and overall misogyny in the content of this show, the audience agreed it was a downright bad show.

Regardless, ABC affiliates (non-O&O) knew what they were getting with this show. Each affiliate has the choice not to carry a network show. Those that did carry this show have abused our public airwaves to promote hatred and put profits over responsibility to their community.

Every ABC non-O&O affiliate is now accountable for their actions and with the license renewal cycle getting ready to start, I am sure this will be fresh in the minds of some of us who care about who radiates in the electromagnetic spectrum in their markets.

This show and other shows that include GLBT, transsexual or other minority groups as the brunt of their humor are these stations' way to subliminally reflect the homophobic, transphobic and racist views of the owners and/or management of the affiliate.

In my local DMA (market), when I complained about the show, the response from the general manager is that they do not "censor" network offerings. I feel that an affiliate has the responsibility to carry programs that are responsible and meet the needs of the community. For example, KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, owned by Bonneville (a commercial broadcasting venture of the LDS Church) does not carry Saturday Night Live. Also, stations in the deep south have been known to refuse to carry certain network programming.

Our local TV network affiliates are supposed to be the beacons for our community. These companies are entrusted to serve the public interest as a public trustee.

Is subliminally promoting bigotry and misogyny to the masses really in the public interest?

O&O means "owned and operated" - TV stations that are actually owned by the network are called O&Os. O&Os are normally in the largest markets such as WABC-TV New York, KABC-TV Los Angeles and WLS-TV Chicago. Non-O&O stations are not owned by the network but by private corporations including major group owners. A majority of TV stations that carry the programming of a major network are non-O&O stations.
